Unleaded Gasoline UST Closure - Northwest, Pennsylvania

Client: Paper Products Manufacturer

Background:

Operations at this site were terminated in June 2002. After plant closure, one (1) regulated underground storage tank (UST) present at the site was to be closed in accordance with PADEP regulations. The UST was 10,000-gallons in capacity and used for storage of unleaded gasoline. A single dispenser was located over of the western end of the UST on a concrete pad. The tank was previously used to fuel plant equipment and vehicles.

Project Work:

Prior to UST removal, the above ground dispenser wasUnleaded Gasoline UST Closure - Northwest, Pennsylvania removed, drained and dismantled. The UST was then excavated along its centerline. Residual liquids were pumped from the tank using a drum vacuum into 55-gallon drums. The atmosphere within the UST was monitored for combustible gas levels and oxygen utilizing a lower explosion limit/O2 meter (LEL). The tank was then was purged of LEL utilizing the drum vacuum and cleaned in place. All lines associated with the tank were then vacuumed and removed. The tank and all lines were in excellent condition with no signs of holes, corrosion or leakage. The tank was removed from the ground, scrapped and sent off-site for recycling. The tank cavity was then backfilled.

Prior to backfilling, two (2) soil samples were collected from the long walls of the tank excavation just above the soil to water interface. Two (2) samples were also collected from the pit water in the excavation. All samples were analyzed for PADEP unleaded UST analytical parameters. All laboratory results were below laboratory detection limits and met the PADEP standards.

A closure report was prepared to document site conditions and no further work was required by the PADEP to address this area.

Special Features:

All project work was completed to comply with applicable PADEP standards.
